Escaping to Butley Abbey Wilds: A Hidden Suffolk Gem

I didn’t realise how much I needed quiet until I arrived at Butley Abbey Wilds. Not just “out of office” quiet, but the kind where your mind actually slows down and everything feels a little softer. No background noise, no rush, no pressure to be anywhere or do anything.

From the moment we pulled in, it felt like we’d stumbled on something really special. The setting is honestly unreal — endless greenery, open land, and that feeling of being completely tucked away from everything. It’s the kind of place where you instantly breathe deeper without even noticing. AND it’s dog friendly, which was so important for us.

The house itself is so beautiful. Effortless, warm, and aesthetic in that understated way that doesn’t feel staged. It’s cosy, with little details that make you feel at home straight away. You know when a place just feels good to be in? That. I kept catching myself wanting to take photos of every corner, but at the same time just wanting to sit down and enjoy it properly.

Mornings were probably my favourite. Slow and sunny, making coffee, looking out onto greenery (and wandering deer!). It felt surreal, like we were in a film scene.

The host was amazing, too. So kind, helpful, and just genuinely welcoming without being over the top. It felt very natural and easy, which makes such a big impact on a stay like this. You never feel like “just a guest,” more like you’ve been trusted with this beautiful space for a while. The host had also surprised us with a hamper full of snacks (not forgetting about the dog, that was so sweet!)

We spent most of the weekend doing… not much, and that was exactly the point. Long walks, slow meals, sitting outside, talking, doing nothing. And somehow that ended up feeling like everything.

Exploring Around

Even though it’s tempting to stay tucked away the whole time, there are some really lovely spots nearby if you feel like venturing out a bit, starting with a lovely, cosy cafe called PINCH. Pinch is cafe with a limited menu focusing on Roman pizza by the slice, crullers and gelato – and the crullers & coffee were SO good!

We drove over to Orford, which is one of those postcard-perfect villages. It’s small, quiet, and really charming, with little streets and that classic countryside feel. Orford Castle sits right in the middle and is definitely worth seeing, even just from the outside.

For food, we stopped at The Butley Oyster which was such a good choice — relaxed, cosy, and exactly what you want after a long walk.

If you’re in the mood for something a bit more scenic, Rendlesham Forest is perfect for long, peaceful walks. It’s wild and untouched, with this slightly dramatic landscape that feels completely different to anywhere else nearby.

We also headed to Dunwich Beach for a change of scenery. Think pebble beach, sea air, and that slightly windswept but cute coastal vibe. It’s simple, but in a really nice way.

By the end of the weekend, I genuinely didn’t want to leave. It’s rare to find somewhere that feels this calm but still inspiring at the same time. A place where you can switch off properly but still feel like you’re experiencing something special.
